The DE18000 were part of the same order to French industry as the DE24000 (see below). These DE18000 are a lightweight BoBo version of the DE24000 for 1-3 and low axle load version (similar to DE18100) for Thrace lines. They have a 12 cylinders engine instead of a 16 cylinders. Accordingly, the weight is down to 80t, thus giving an axle load of 20t. The DE18000 and the DE24000 share many common parts and look very similar. There are some rare photos of these locomotives in some group discussions.

This short batch of 3 units was a trial. TCDD much preferred the CoCo version DE18000 spend most of their live in Izmir area, working on all kind of duties. In fact it is said that DE18004-24 were converted into DE24000 later.

The DE18000 was followed by a A1AA1A version, the DE18100, very similar in all part with minor differences in the body except the bogies and the axle load.

All DE18000 are now retired from service except DE18003 still going along.
